A country or territory has specific requirements for any individual to enter or stay in their country. For Canadian citizens to enter Belgium and stay for no more than 90 days, no visa is required, but they must have at least a passport valid for more than 3 months of their intended stay. They must also have proof of accommodations and ample financial means during their stay. They also must be able to present return tickets to Canada.

If they plan to stay for more than 90 days, either to visit relatives, study or undergo internship, they will need to get a temporary residence visa from the Consulate General of Belgium in Montreal. Visa applications can be done through personal appearance or can be sent by registered mail or courier service.

General requirements:

• Passport issued within previous 10 years (valid for at least 1 year and with more than 1 blank page)
• 2 copies completed and signed visa application forms (original copies)
• Recent colored passport size photos (2 copies, plain light-colored background)
• Medical certificate from a Belgian Embassy accredited doctor
• For visitor temporary residence visa:
  • applicant’s birth certificate (documents to be legalized at the Consulate General’s office)
  • marriage certificate (for married couples, documents to be legalized at the Consulate General’s office)
  • proof of relationship with relative in Belgium
  • Belgian identity card/residence permit of relative in Belgium
  • Proof of financial means of relative in Belgium
• For internship temporary residence visa:
  • original internship letter, with details of internship program
  • passport valid for duration of internship with additional 3 months
  • Proof on no- criminal police record issued by the Royal Canadian Police of past 5 years
  • Proof of means of subsistence, at least CAD$800.00 monthly
  • Medical & travel insurance coverage for whole duration in Belgium
• For exchange student temporary residence permit:
  • original guarantee form, signed by the applicant, parents, host family and host counselor and school
  • passport valid for at least 15 months
  • parental/legal guardian’s consent (for minors)
  • Proof on no- criminal police record issued by the Royal Canadian Police of past 5 years (for individuals 18 years and above)
• For university student visa temporary residence permit:
  • original admission letter of Belgian university/institute of higher education
  • passport valid for duration of studies with additional 3 months
  • Proof on no- criminal police record issued by the Royal Canadian Police of past 5 years (for individuals 18 years and above)
  • Proof of financial support and means for student
  • Proof of means of subsistence, at least CAD$920.00 monthly
  • Medical & travel insurance coverage for whole duration in Belgium
