It is the prerogative of every country to have requirements for people to meet in order for them to be allowed to enter or pass through their territory. These requirements may be visas, travel permits or consent letters. Other countries only call for individuals from particular countries their national passport as a form of travel and identification document.

Canadian passport holders who are traveling to Hungary do not need to obtain entry visas to Hungary if their passports are still valid for at least three months. Canada is one of the countries that are part of visa-exempt countries that can travel to Hungary. No visa is also applicable to members of the Shengen Agreement, and these include Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Canadian passport holders will be allowed to stay in Hungary for no more than 90 days without the need for visas. If they would want to stay in Hungary for more than 90 days or will need to stay there longer because of the purpose of their trip, they must apply for residence permits after they arrive in Hungary at a Hungarian Office of Immigration and Nationality (OIN). The OIN has regional offices where visitors can apply for a residence permit while they are in Hungary. There are different residence permit applications and requirements for different purposes such as employment or other gainful activity, family reunification, medical treatment, official trip, research, studies, visit and others. They should be ready with the necessary requirements when applying for residence permits. Applications should be made within 60 days of their stay in Hungary.

Important reminders:

• Travelers must remember not to overstay longer than the allowed 90 days or they may be asked to pay a penalty and asked to leave the country.
• Applications for residence permits must be made 30 days before the last day of the allowed 90 days.
