Canadians traveling to South Africa for tourist or business purposes do not need to obtain visas and are granted a stay of less than 90 days, provided that they possess Canadian passports that are valid for at least 30 days beyond the date of departure and these have at least 2 blank pages. It is, however, recommended that Canadians ensure their passports are valid for at least 6 months beyond the expected duration of their trip for any international travel.
Aside from valid passports, Canadians must also have international certificates for yellow fever vaccination (if coming from countries where the disease is common) and return or onward airline tickets. In the event that they do not have proof of means of departure, travelers may be required to deposit the amount equivalent to their airline fare with customs. This will be refunded upon departure from South Africa.
Overstaying without authority in South Africa is a serious offense. Violators may be arrested upon departure and detained before appearing in court. Fines will be levied offenders can face deportation at their own expense.
It is imperative that Canadians exercise prudence whenever traveling internationally. The most current entry requirements for South Africa should be sought before leaving Canada, as this information is subject to change at any time.
