Visa Requirements for Canadian Passport Holders – Russia (Russian Federation)

Canadian citizens traveling to Russia must obtain visas to enter the country for stays of up to 90 days. A valid Canadian passport is required for Canadians planning to visit Russia. The passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of your expected departure from Russia. Processing time for most visas is at least 15 working days.

Canadian citizens visiting Russia should have their original travel documents, such as their valid passport, entry/exit visa, and registered migration card, with them at all times. Any failure to comply may possibly result in heavy fines or a jail sentence. It is extremely difficult to replace these documents, which could considerably delay going back to Canada.

General Requirements – TOURIST VISA(for 30 days maximum):

  • Original of completedvisa application form with attached photo, one (1) per person
    Application form must be filled out in capital letters using a black point-pen or any typing machine or computer. Writing must be legibly clear. Your photo must meet following requirements: the frame size must be 35mm X 45 mm (1 3/8” X 1 3/4”); the photos must be clear, well defined and taken against a plain white or light-colored background; and glued on the form strictly at reserved space.
  • Valid Canadian Passport
    At least two pages of the passport should be free of any notes, stamps and visas. Passport must be valid at least 6 months after your expected departure date from Russia.
  • One (1) photocopy of information pages of the passport
  • If travelling individually, Submit a letter from yourself explaining who is travelling, where, when and with what purpose.
  • Standard form of confirmation for foreign tourists CONFIRMATION is issued by the Russian hosting travel company.

It carries a REFERENCE-NUMBER of the hosting company (which confirms that this company is allowed to invite foreign tourists), personal data of each tourist, dates of trip, itinerary in Russia, services as paid. Confirmation must be signed by authorized person and carry the official seal of the Russian travel company. The confirmation of prepaid accommodation at the hotel you are going to stay provided by the hotel.

General Requirements – PRIVATE VISA:

  • Original of completedvisa application form with attached photo, one (1) per person.
    Application form must be filled out in capital letters using a black point-pen or any typing machine or computer. Writing must be legibly clear. Your photo must meet following requirements: the frame size must be 35mm X 45 mm (1 3/8” X 1 3/4”); the photos must be clear, well defined and taken against a plain white or light-colored background; and glued on the form strictly at reserved space.
  • A valid Canadian passport
    At least two pages of the passport should be free of any notes, stamps and visas.
  • One (1) photocopy of information pages of the passport.
  • A letter from yourself explaining who is travelling, where, when and for what purpose.
  • Invitation that is to be arranged by your hosts through the local office of the Federal Migration Service (FMS) in Russia and to be submitted in original.
    The allowed period of stay is shown on the document which cannot exceed 90 days.
  • In a case of an emergency (unexpected illness, death, etc. of close relatives) a private visa can be obtained within several hours upon the submission of a certified document from a Russian hospital or a copy of a death certificate.
    Documents confirming relationship are required.

  • Original of completedvisa application formwith attached photo, one (1) per person.
    Application form must be filled out in capital letters using a black point-pen or any typing machine or computer. Writing must be legibly clear. Your photo must meet following requirements: the frame size must be 35mm X 45 mm (1 3/8” X 1 3/4”); the photos must be clear, well defined and taken against a plain white or light-colored background; and glued on the form strictly at reserved space.
  • A valid Canadian passport
    At least two pages of the passport should be free of any notes, stamps and visas. Passport must be valid at least 6 months after your supposed date of departure from Russia
  • One (1) photocopy of information pages of the passport.
  • If travelling individually, submit a letter from your company or from yourself explaining who is travelling, where, when and with what purpose.
  • The most important document to be submitted is INVITATION or VISA SUPPORT.
    INVITATIONfrom your Russian host must be issued by the local office of the Federal Migration Service of the Russian Federation (FMS). The invitations for a work, study or multiple entry visas must be submitted in original.
  • VISA SUPPORTis provided by your host through Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia. Please, check with us that your visa support has arrived to Consular Division PRIOR to sending documents.If applying for a multi-entry or double entry visa, it should be specifically mentioned in the Visa support.
  • Applicants planning to stay in Russia for more than 3 months (work or study) must submit HIV test Certificate issued not earlier than 3 months before the visa application.
