All US citizens who wish to travel to Iraq should have a passport with at least six months validity and a visa. Visas can be obtained at the Embassy of Iraq in Washington DC. It is imperative that you secure a visa before traveling since there is no visa issuance at the airport. Once in the country, all visitors are required to get an arrival sticker stamp within 10 days of arrival.

All those staying for more than 10 days must also secure a no-fee residency permit. In order to obtain a residency permit, visitor must present proof of employment and 2 passport size pictures. Failure to do so will result to an USD 8.00 fine. If staying for more than 2 months, a US citizen must apply for an extension at the Residency Office. Arrival stamp and residency permit are available in Baghdad at the main Residency Office near the National Theater.

Before departing Iraq, US visitors must obtain an exit and re-entry permit at the Residency Office. Exit stamp fee is between USD 20 and USD 200. The amount that must be paid depends on the length of stay, type of entry visa and other factors. However, those who stayed for less than 10 days do not need to get an exit stamp.
