Visa Requirements for UK Passport Holders – The Gambia (Republic of The Gambia)

The Gambia, or the Republic of the Gambia, is located in West Africa and is the smallest country in the African mainland. It has the Atlantic Ocean at its western side, and is bounded by Senegal on the north, south and east. The Gambian river flows between the two countries borders, which is where The Gambia gets its name. It is a member of the ECOWAS, or the Economic Community of West African States, and is known as the smiling coast of Africa.

The Gambia is a tropical country and is now becoming a popular destination among Europeans. This is due to the fact that it is very near to major European cities. Many tourists visit the Gambia to enjoy the beaches, flavorful cuisine, and rich culture that the country has to offer.

The Republic of Gambia’s government has recognized tourism as one of the major sources of the country’s revenues. They are now promoting their country aggressively and inviting many foreign nationals to come to the Gambia. The major drives of the Gambian government are to promote responsible tourism and increase quality standards in order to further develop tourism in their country.

Tourists can choose to go to the River Gambia and enjoy bird watching activities, mangrove exploration tours or river cruises to see and visit the many river villages. They can also do dolphin watching cruises or sport fishing along the coast. The Gambia also has a very rich and diverse culture, coming from many ethnic influences. Gambians are also known for their outstanding music and dances. There are also archaeological sites, historical buildings and monuments, some of which are included in the UNSECO world heritage list that visitors can go to.

UK passport holders are not required to have a visa when travelling to the Republic of Gambia as long as they will only stay in the country for no longer than 28 days. Their UK passport must also be valid for at least 3 months. If they would like to extend their stay in the Gambia for more than 28 days, they must apply for an extension the Gambian Immigration Department Office in Banjul, the capital of the Gambia. They will also have to pay a 250.00 Dalasi extension fee per month.

There is a €20.00 Airport Development Fee that must be paid when leaving the Gambia which will be collected by an official from the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority. This can be paid in cash (or equivalent Dalasi) or by credit card, although only Visa credit cards are accepted.
