British passport holders do not need visas when going to Hungary as long as they have valid UK passports. They will be allowed to stay in Hungary for 90 days. If they want to stay in the country longer than the allowed 90 days, they will have to report to a Hungarian Immigration Office that is nearest to them.
There are roughly 400,000 visitors from the UK who go to Hungary every year. Most UK citizens who traveled to Hungary have never encountered major problems regarding entry, although there were a few cases where the British Consulate had to provide assistance to their citizens. These cases included law offenders, hospital assistance and some cases of passport loss or theft.
The British government reminds UK passport holders to always carry their passports with them and other forms of identification while traveling in Hungary. They must carry the original passport with them at all times but they should be very careful not to misplace it or be unfortunate enough to get it stolen. This is very important since they will also need to present their passport to immigration and border officials when leaving Hungary. If their passport gets stolen or lost, they must immediately get in touch with the British Consulate in Hungary to have their passport replaced.
Hungary is relatively considered very safe to tourists although there are still a good number of petty crimes that occur in the country. There are numerous cases of scam victims and those who were overcharged by bars, restaurants and taxi drivers. Tourists should always double check the money or banknotes since there are cases of banknotes that are no longer used or valid and are being given to tourists as change. If they need to have their money exchanged for local currency, they should only go to banks or authorized exchange centers, and not deal with money changers in the streets. Tourists are also advised to be very careful and not to travel alone at night.
UK passport holders are also advised to get a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This gives them the benefits of emergency medical treatment if ever they need any. They should also get vaccinations against tick borne encephalitis before their planned trip more importantly if they are going to areas that are near forests or bodies of water. There are also reported cases of HIV/AIDS in Hungary which is why travelers are advised to be safe and practice appropriate safety measures to avoid infection.
For any updates on travel requirements to Hungary, they may visit or call the Hungarian Embassy in London.
