British nationals who wish to visit Japan for tourism, family visits or business may enter the country without a visa. All you need is a valid passport, roundtrip or onward airline ticket and proof of sufficient funds to cover the trip. The passport should be valid for the duration of the trip.
The Japanese government permits British citizens to stay in Japan for up to 90 days but this can be extended for another 90 days. Extension on stay should be applied for at the Ministry of Justice- Regional Immigration Bureau.
All foreign nationals, except those 16 years old and younger, entering Japan must be fingerprinted and digitally photographed upon arrival at the airport. Refusing to do so will result in denial of entry.
Those who wish to work or study in Japan must consult with the Japanese Embassy or Consulate Office for visa requirements. Visas should be obtained prior to departure since the Japanese immigration does not issue visas on arrival. Engaging in work-related, paid activities without the proper visa is punishable by law and may result in levying of fines, arrest or detention. Avoid overstaying as well since it is also punishable by law.
