Visa Requirements for US Passport Holders – Ecuador (Republic of Ecuador)

US citizens whose passports are valid for at least six months can travel to Ecuador and stay there for 90 days without the need for a visa. They must also be able to present copies of their return tickets to the United States.

If they are planning on staying in Ecuador longer than 90 days they must apply for an Ecuadorian visa before they travel to Ecuador. Individuals who are caught overstaying in Ecuador will be deported immediately and cannot travel to Ecuador within nine months.

Visa application requirements

  1. US passport (valid for at least 6 months)
  2. Fully accomplished visa application form
  3. 2 colored passport size photographs (white background)
  4. For student visa (CATEGORY 12-V, valid for 1 year)
    1. Proof of financial support (notarized)
    2. Certificate of police clearance
    3. Proof of admission or registration from Ecuadorian school or university
    4. Copy of Registro Official of Ecuadorian school
    5. Filled up Visa certificate form
    6. Paid fees:
      1. Application fee :$30.00
      2. Visa fee : $100.00
  5. For tourist, business, artists, scientist, professional players visa (CATEGORY 12-IX, valid for 6 months)
    1. Proof of good financial status (bank letter or statement)
    2. Certificate of police clearance
    3. Copy of round trip tickets
    4. Filled up Visa certificate form
    5. Paid fees:
      1. Application fee :$30.00
      2. Visa fee : $200.00
  6. For Missionary, Religious, Volunteers visa (CATEGORY 12-VII, valid for 2 years for priests and missionaries, 1 year for lay people)
    1. Proof of financial support from sponsor(notarized)
    2. Certificate of police clearance
    3. Visa request letter from legal representative of organization for applicant
    4. Copy of organization’s authorization to operate in Ecuador
    5. Copy of Legal representative’s appointment as registered and authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
    6. Bylaws of the organization in Ecuador (copy)
    7. Notarized affidavit from host organization or sponsor taking accountability for expenses that missionary or volunteer may incur in the event of deportation or abandonment
    8. Notarized affidavit from applicant to provide volunteer services
    9. Filled up Visa certificate form
    10. Paid fees:
      1. Application fee :$30.00
      2. Visa fee : $150.00
  7. For Teacher or Student Cultural Exchange visa (CATEGORY 12-VIII, valid for 1 year)
    1. Proof of financial support from sponsor(notarized)
    2. Certificate of police clearance
    3. Visa request letter from legal representative of organization for applicant
    4. Copy of Registro Official of organization
    5. Copy of Legal representative’s appointment as registered and authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
    6. Copy of mutual Cultural Exchange Agreement
    7. Notarized affidavit from host organization or sponsor taking accountability for expenses that missionary or volunteer may incur in the event of deportation or abandonment
    8. Notarized affidavit from applicant to provide volunteer services (for Teachers only)
    9. Filled up Visa certificate form
    10. Paid fees:
      1. Application fee :$30.00
      2. Visa fee : $50.00

Important Notes

  • All fees can be paid only in cash or by money order
  • When leaving Ecuador by plane, there is an airport departure tax that is dependent on the location of the airport:
    • Guayaquil – $29.78
    • Quito – $40.80
  • In case of passport loss or theft, US citizens must get a police report to get a passport replacement from the US Consulate General in Guayaquil or from the US Embassy located in Quito. They must then submit their new passport and police report to the Ecuadorian Immigration office in Guayaquil or Quito to get official records of their arrival and legal status in Ecuador
