Visa Requirements for US Passport Holders – Libya (Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya)

US citizens are required to secure a visa prior to traveling to Libya. Americans may travel to Libya for business provided they can present an invitation from sponsors by a company operating in Libya. A business letter from the employer bearing the official company letterhead, name of applicant, his status, and purpose of travel is required.

Travel for tourists has again been allowed since June 2010. Application for a tourist visa can only be coursed through licensed tour operators in Libya, who will file the necessary paperwork for the visa with the Libyan authorities. A letter of invitation from the host stating his/her relation to the applicant, purpose of travel, length of stay, address and contact information in Libya is required.

The Government of Libya does not allow persons with passports bearing an Israeli visa or entry/exit stamps from Israel to enter Libya.

Anyone travelling to Libya must have in his possession at least USD 400 except in some circumstances.

Arabic translation on traveler’s passport is no longer required. However, such requirement was imposed with minimal advance warning in November 2007, and it is possible that such a requirement could be unexpectedly imposed again. Please verify this information with the nearest Libyan embassy or consulate before you travel.
