US citizens require a valid passport and visa to travel to Turkey. A 90-day sticker visa is obtainable at the port of entry for US$20. However, those arriving by cruise ship do not need a visa as long as they are not staying onshore overnight.
US passport holders who intend to travel to Turkey and remain in the territory for more than 3 months must obtain their visa from the Embassy of Turkey or its Consulates. Within their first month of arrival in Turkey, they are also required to apply for a residence or work permit or Turkish ID card.
All foreigners arriving in Turkey should ensure that they get entry stamps on the passport page containing their visa before transferring to domestic flights to avoid serious difficulties upon departure.
Overstaying the validity of the issued visa without the proper authority is considered a serious offense and those who overstay risk paying fines, deportation and even banning from visiting Turkey in the future.
To work in Turkey, US citizens will have to apply for a work permit and visa at the nearest Turkish mission. For this, applicants will only need to submit their visa application form and a letter from their prospective employer. Other documents should be submitted by their employer to the Turkish Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MLSS) within 3 working days of the visa application. The list of documents is available through the MLSS website. Processing of applications is finalized by the MLSS within 90 days. It is imperative that those arriving in Turkey for employment to register at the local police department within 1 month upon arrival (and before starting to work) to obtain the relevant residence permit.
The Turkish Government reserves the right to amend their visa and entry requirements. As such, all the details provided here may change without prior notice. The onus is on the US citizen to obtain the most current information well in advance of travel to avoid delays and difficulties.
