Visa Requirements for US Passport Holders – Belize

Formerly known as British Honduras, the country now known as Belize after they changed their name in 1973, is very famous for its very beautiful beaches and many archaeological, cultural and natural attractions that tourists around the world come to see and experience. The Belize government is promoting their country as a major eco-tourism spot in Central America and even claim to be “Mother Nature’s Best Kept Secret”.
There are a number of countries whose citizens are allowed to enter Belize and stay there for a certain amount of time without the need for a visa. The USA is one of those countries whose people are permitted to travel to Belize as tourists and stay there for 30 days visa-free. US citizens must have a passport valid for 6 months, return tickets to the US and sufficient financial means of subsistence while in Belize.
If they plan to go to Belize for other reasons or would like to stay there for more than 30 days, they would then need to get a visa. They can apply for a Belizean visa either at the Embassy of Belize in Washington DC or at the Consulate General of Belize in Los Angeles, California.

General Belizean visa application requirements:

  3. Bank statement (most recent)
  4. Notarized photocopy of alien registration card, green card or multiple re-entry US visa (for non US-born US citizens)
  5. Passport-size photograph
  6. Copies of travel itinerary/proof (airline ticket/e-ticket)
  7. Letter of employment (for business travel)
  8. Proof of means of subsistence while in Belize (US$60.00/day)
  9. Visa application fees:
    1. If application is done at the Belizean Embassy in Washington:
      1. Single entry – US$50.00 (valid for 90 days)
      2. Multiple entry – US$100.00
      3. Shipping and Handling fee – US$30.00
      4. “Same day” urgent processing fee – US$25.00 (optional, only applicable to applications that do not require clearance from the Director of Immigration of Belize)
    2. If application is done at the Belizean Consulate in Los Angeles:
      1. Embassy Single entry – US$75.00
      2. Multiple entry – US$150.00
      3. Shipping and Handling fee:
        1. US$30.00 – within California (thru Federal Express)
        2. US$35.00 – outside of California (thru Federal Express)

  3. Visa processing time for applications done at the Embassy in Washington normally takes 3 business days after they receive the application. There are cases when processing may need a longer time if the application has to be cleared with the Director of Immigration of Belize. Application status inquiries can be done by calling the Embassy through (202)-332-9636 Ext 221.
  4. All fees at the Embassy in Washington can be paid either by money order, certified check, bank draft (to the order the Embassy of Belize) and sent together with the application. Paying by cash is an option available for people doing their applications personally at the Embassy.
  5. For personal applications coursed through the Consulate in Los Angeles, approved visas can be obtained if their application does not need any Immigration or Security clearance. If for some reason, the applicant cannot do their application personally at the Consulate, they would have to get all their documents notarized, and processing for their application would take around 7 days.
  6. Fees at the Consulate can only be paid in either cashier’s checks or money order. Cash or personal checks will not be accepted.
  7. All approved visas and passports will be sent back to the applicants, together with any original documents they have submitted.
  8. A US$39.75 exit fee is paid by anyone who is leaving Belize through their airport. This can only be paid in US dollars or by a credit or debit card.
  9. Tourists who are already in Belize and who would like to stay for more than 30 days can get a 30 day extension at any Belize Immigration Office after paying an extension fee of BZD$60.00.
