Visa Requirements for US Passport Holders – Slovakia (Slovak Republic)

Slovakia is party to the Schengen agreement, and this means that US citizens do not need visas to enter Slovakia. In the Schengen zone, the maximum stay for tourist and business purposes is 90 days. However, upon arrival, travelers from the United States will be asked to present current US passports and these must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the date of expected departure from Slovakia; evidence of financial means to support their stay (generally in the amount of US$50 per person per day); and proof of medical insurance valid in the territory to cover all costs for hospitalization and medical treatment in Slovakia.

It is required for all US visitors to Slovakia to register with the local police with jurisdiction in their area of temporary residence within 3 working days of their arrival. Those staying in hotels are registered automatically upon checking in. It is also mandatory for everyone above 15 years old to carry official identification at all times in Slovakia. For Americans, their US passports will suffice.

Those intending to stay in Slovakia for more than 90 days for purposes other than tourism or business must apply for temporary residence permits soon after arriving in Slovakia. It is strongly advised that preparations for the temporary residence permit application be done in advance of travel to the country, as the required documents for submission will be easier to obtain in the United States.

It is always the American traveler’s responsibility to check for the most current information before traveling to Slovakia, as the information provided here is subject to change without prior notice.
