Visa Requirements for US Passport Holders – Thailand (Kingdom of Thailand)

US citizens do not require visas when visiting Thailand for a maximum of 30 days when entering by air. US citizens entering Thailand by land can only stay for a maximum of 15 days per visit. In any case, US citizen tourists entering Thailand without visas cannot remain in the territory for more than 90 days during any 6-month period from the date of first entry. Tourists arriving in Thailand should ensure their passports are valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry.

Upon entering the country, Thai immigration stamps the passports of each visitor with the date their authorized stay will expire. Overstaying is considered a serious offense and if any tourist stays beyond their permitted date without the proper authority, they will be charged a fine of 500 Baht per day, up to a maximum of 20,000 Baht, when they depart Thailand. Those found overstaying also face serious punishment such as imprisonment, deportation at the offender’s own expense and may be banned from re-entering Thailand. US citizens are advised to be extremely cautious of private companies offering visa extension services, even those advertising in major periodicals and located near police stations or Immigration offices, as these are illegal. There have been reports of US citizens arrested at border crossings each year with counterfeit visas and entry stamps which were obtained through illegal services.

Working without permits is illegal for foreigners, including unpaid work, volunteer and in exchange for room and board. It is imperative that US citizens traveling to Thailand for work to first check with a Royal Thai Embassy to ensure that their plan is within the bounds of their laws.
