Visa Requirements for US Passport Holders – Ukraine

US citizens visiting Ukraine for less than 90 days within a 180-day period for the purposes of tourism, private travel or business do not need to obtain Ukrainian visas. However, US citizens intending to visit Ukraine for reasons other than tourism, business or private travel or are planning to stay for more than 90 days must obtain visas from the Embassy of Ukraine or Consulates General of Ukraine in the US in advance of travel (addresses provided below).

Upon entering Ukraine as tourists without the need for visa, US citizens are automatically registered at the border for 90 days. Extensions of stay could be requested, but travelers are advised that extensions are rarely approved. Those wishing to apply for an extension may do so by visiting the local office of the Ukraine State Department of Citizenship, Immigration and Registration (VGIFRO, but more commonly referred to by the old acronym, OVIR) no less than 3 days before the expiration of the initial registration. The OVIR website lists the contact numbers for central regional OVIR offices in the Ukrainian language.

Those entering Ukraine with visas are also automatically registered at the border for 90 days. It is mandatory to extend the stay for beyond 90 days by applying with the local OVIR offices 3 days before the initial registration expires, even if the visa held by the visitor is valid for more than 90 days. Travelers who fail to follow this rule may face fines upon departure from Ukraine even if their visas are still valid. The only exemptions to this rule are those holding “P” (religious) visas – on entry, they are registered for the entire duration of the visa validity and do not need to apply for extensions of stay.

General Requirements:

  1. Valid US passport with validity of at least 6 months beyond the date of proposed departure from Ukraine. The passport must also contain at least 1 blank page.
  2. Fully accomplished and duly signed visa application form, printed or written in block letters in black ink. Only one type of visa is issued per entry so the primary purpose of entry should be clearly stated in the visa application form.
  3. 1 recent passport size photograph.
  4. If submitting passport of a child alone: The child’s passport must be accompanied by a joint notarized written request from both parents and copies of their visas.
  5. If submitting the application by mail: A self-addressed, prepaid FedEx or USPS Express Mail or Priority Mail envelope for the return of the passport must be included.
  6. For business purposes: Original letter of invitation from a legal entity duly registered in Ukraine, detailing their official address and telephone number printed in the letterhead. The letter must be signed by an authorized officer of the entity and bear their seal. It must also be accompanied by a clear copy of a valid Certificate of Registration in Ukraine, when applicable. The invitation letter should include the purpose, number of visits, exact travel dates cities/towns to be visited, and provide the basic passport data of the invitee.
  7. For tourist purposes: Letter of invitation from a Ukrainian tourist agency with “VAUCHER” of the agency and confirmation of a hotel booking in Ukraine.
  8. For transit visa: Valid visa for the destination country, other documents to support entry into that country, or a confirmed one-way or round-trip ticket for travel from Ukraine to the next country.

Please note:

  • The Consular Office reserves the right to evaluate and request for more documents to support the purpose of the trip when deemed necessary.
  • The Embassy or Consular Office do not accept any other kind of mail and are not liable for postal service, or the loss of documents when in transit.
  • Visa processing takes 9 business days. Rush processing takes 3 business days.
  • All application forms and all documents attached to the applications sent by mail have to be authenticated by Apostille (in the Office of Secretary of State). Applicants who fail to abide by this regulation can expect their applications to be sent back, unprocessed.
  • Those submitting their applications in person will need no further authentication of signatures.
  • Visa duration and fees have to be confirmed with the Embassy of Ukraine or Consulates General of Ukraine.

The information provided here is subject to change without notice. US citizens are advised to obtain the most current visa, entry and exit requirements for Ukraine before making travel arrangements. Furthermore, visas should be applied for well in advance of planned travel (at least 1 month prior to prospective departure date). Longer processing time is required, at least 12 days, for peak seasons (spring and summer months).
