Visa Requirements for US Passport Holders – Austria (Republic of Austria)

Austria is part of the Schengen agreement, which comprises 25 European countries. US citizens are allowed to enter any country or countries part of the Schengen agreement without the need for a visa, as long as they have a valid US passport and will only stay for no more than 90 days.

If a US citizen would want to stay in Austria or travel to other countries in the Schengen agreement for more than 90 days, they must get a visa from the Embassy of Austria, or from any of the Austrian Consulates General in the United States. These Consular offices assist applicants from specific regions in the US. An applicant’s passport must be valid for more than three months past their planned stay in Austria.

General visa application requirements (original copies)

  1. Completed visa application form (with 2 signatures of applicant)
  2. Valid US passport (not older than 10 years and valid for  at least three months after date of travel)
  3. Passport pictures (recent, 2 copies)
  4. Copy of airline tickets and complete travel itinerary
  5. Proof of worldwide insurance coverage from provider (minimum coverage of US$50,000 and should last for whole trip and additional 15 days)
  6. For non-US citizens : Valid US visa, original form I-94, I-20 or IAP-66 ( or original Alien Registration Card or Form I-512)
  7. For applicants staying more than 90 days (not more than 6 months):
    1. Financial statements (last 3 months, must include name and address of applicant)
    2. Proof of employment (with income details)
    3. For applicants with own business: bank statements, business registration and tax returns
    4. Details of Austrian accommodation
  8. For applicants working for less than 6 months:
    1. work permit given by Austrian Employment Service (AMS)
    2. Letter from employer
    3. Income statement
  9. For applicants who will study in Austria:
    1. Birth certificate
    2. Bank statement for proof of means of subsistence (self-supporting applicants)
    3. Original Letter of admission from Austrian school or university
    4. Letter of confirmation from US university (for exchange programs)
    5. Details of Austrian accommodation
    6. Notarized Letter of financial responsibility signed by parents, with most recent bank statements (for students)

Important notes:

Visa applications processing can take anywhere from two to three weeks as long as all required documents are complete.

  2. A self-addressed, envelope with an appropriate stamp from the US Postal Service should be included by individuals with their application if they want their documents and passport returned to them by mail.
  3. Applicants should not call the Embassy or Consulate to follow-up their application. They will be contacted by officers from the Austrian Consulate if they need to submit additional documents or if their visa has been processed.
  4. Visa application fees:
    1. Student Visa: US$135.00
    2. Other Visa:  US$81.00 (adults), US$47.30 (Children aged 6-12)
