Visa Requirements for US Passport Holders – Sudan (Republic of Sudan)

US citizens are required to secure a visa prior to traveling to Sudan. Visitors must also have a passport valid for at least six months.

An entry permit is issued to persons going to the Sudan for the purpose of business or tourism. Period of stay must be from eight (8) days to one (1) month. Extensions of periods of stay in the Sudan may be done through the Passport, Immigration and Natinaity Office in Khartoum, Sudan.

General Requirements:

  1. Filled-out Visa Application Form
  2. Passport (must be valid for at least six (6) months and should not have Israeli Visas of Immigration stamps affixed to it).
  3. Yellow fever and cholera vaccinations are recommended.
  4. A letter from the sponsoring company stating the purpose of the trip, duration of stay, financial responsibility and references in Sudan.
  5. One (1) passport sized photo
  6. Visa application fee

Applicants sending their applications by mail must furnish the Consular section of the Embassy with a return envelope with tracking no. (postage/shipment paid by the applicant) using one of the services listed below. Failure to send one may cause delay in the return of the passport(s).

Additional requirements for Tourist/Business:

Visas are issued upon approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Khartoum, Sudan.

All Applications must first be presented to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Sudan by one of the following:

  • A Sponsor (Relatives or Friends in Sudan)
  • A Sponsoring Company based in Sudan
  • Business partner based in Sudan
  • A Hotel or Travel Agency based in Sudan. Please visit for the list of hotels and travel agencies who can assist with the visa application process.

Fee is USD151.00

Please note:

  • Only the following forms of payment are accepted:

For mail applications: U.S. Postal money Order, company Check, Cashier’s Check,

For applications dropped at the embassy: Cash, U.S. Postal money Order, Company Check, Cashier’s Check

  • All payments must be payable to Embassy of Sudan.
  • It usually takes four (4) to six (6) weeks to process visa applications. Applicants may follow up with the Consular section of the Embassy to check the status of their application.

Additional reminders from the US Department of State:

  • Visitors must obtain an exit visa before departing from Sudan, and must pay any airport departure tax not included in the traveler’s airline ticket.
  • Travel permits issued by the semi-autonomous Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) or by the South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (SSRRC) are not adequate for entry to Sudan. These documents may be useful while in the South.
  • Visitors must register at the Ministry of Interior within three days after arriving in Sudan.  All foreigners traveling more than 25 kilometers outside of Khartoum must obtain a travel permit from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs in Khartoum.  Travelers without these permits may be detained by Sudanese authorities.  This requirement applies to travel for any purpose, including private, commercial, and humanitarian activities.
  • Visitors must register again with the police within 24 hours of arriving at a destination outside Khartoum.  A separate travel permit is required for travel to Darfur.
