Visa Requirements for US Passport Holders – Malawi (Republic of Malawi)

US passport holders do not need visas for tourist or business travels to Malawi. Their US passports must have at least 6 months remaining validity from the date of entry into the country. Any foreign traveler wishing to visit the Republic of Malawi for any purpose other than tourism or business negotiations (e.g. work, study, adoption, immigration, or stays longer than stipulated in the entry requirements) should contact the embassy or nearest consulate.

General Entry Requirements:

  • A valid US passport
  • Return ticket
  • Sufficient funds

US passport holders traveling to Malawi for tourism, transit or business for 30 days or less may obtain a visitor’s permit at the airports or border points of entry for free. 30-day permits may be extended twice up to a supplementary 30 days for each renewal preceding expiration. At this time, the Malawi Immigration Department is charging for all permit extensions. Application for a permit extension for an additional 30 days (or less) is MK 5,000.00 and application for a second permit extension for an additional 30 days (or less) is also MK 5,000.00.

A permit extension application must be tendered prior to its expiration date; although granting for the request is not guaranteed.
